The library is a fabulous resource, with a current collection of over 150,000 books, including many titles in English, French, German, Italian and others. They regularly host events and exhibitions, such as Italian photographer and journalist Gianni Bellesia, who presented his photographic album "Albania 1994... a people in motion", to the Library, and the recent youth-oriented "History of the Graphic Novel and Cartoon"

Here's a quick history of the library.

Founding and Early Years

The Biblioteka Publike Durrës was established in 1922 as one of Albania's earliest public libraries outside Tirana, initially housed in a modest building near the city's ancient amphitheatre. Founded during the post-independence era under King Zog I, it aimed to promote literacy and cultural preservation in the historic port city of Durrës. The library's core collection began with donations from local intellectuals, expatriates, and state acquisitions, focusing on Albanian literature, history, and European classics translated into Albanian.

Development Through Challenges

Throughout the interwar period and World War II, the library expanded its holdings to over 10,000 volumes despite wartime disruptions, including occupation by Italian and German forces. In the communist era starting in 1944, it was reorganized under Enver Hoxha's regime as a state institution, emphasizing ideological works while maintaining a broad catalog. By the 1970s, a new dedicated building was constructed, enabling growth to serve thousands of readers annually and incorporating children's sections and reading rooms.

Post-Communist Evolution and Modern Role

After Albania's transition to democracy in 1991, the library faced funding shortages but underwent renovations in the early 2000s with support from international donors like the Soros Foundation. Today, it holds approximately 150,000 items, including rare manuscripts and digital resources, functioning as a community hub for education, events, and cultural heritage in Durrës. Ongoing digitization efforts ensure accessibility amid Albania's integration into global networks.
